Shipping:

  Michael Colee C/O SNARL
  1016 Mt. Morrison Road
  Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546

Schedules:

LiDAR: Dave had weather issues on an earlier trip so has to head up to Alaska next week. He and I are hoping to converge at the site for installation of the automated LiDAR sometime between Sept 17th-22nd.

Kerry: flight delayed: arriving in Mammoth ~noon of Aug 17th, available thru 26th+ staying at the Shilo Inn.

Alex: available Aug 16th thru 25th.

Bert: arriving UCSB for meetings/logistics Aug 14-17, Mammoth 18-21.

Dozier: @UCSB Aug16-18, Mammoth 18-25+

Colee: @UCSB Aug10->16th, Mammoth 17th-26th.

Stuart Wilkinson (USGS Seismology stuff): Aug 18th or 19th. To make their eqpt more permanent.

  • Met w/ Stuart on the 19th, they're gonna try to anchor their seismometers in bedrock near iBeam and run cabling in thru former gamma sensor tube to bunker.

20100817-Shopping List and TODO items

  • 6' drip catch material
  • 2 tubes epoxy
  • 4 @ 10"x78" lysimeter walls

Group Questions:

  • Location of Sonic Anemometers?
    • FYI: Purging the WindMast
  • Field notes in Wiki... migrate appropriately from there:
    • Daily Journal/Site Visit Log
    • Data issues/notes/flags
    • Instrument metadata
  • Repair big lisymeter: 25cm walls.
  • Ned: Thermisters at Patrol site? Abandon?
  • Snow Pillow: Nope.
  • Precip guage: Nope.
  • Heated sonic anemometer: Yes.
  • Ski-Pole TempProbe?
    • Bert: Thermisters or Thermocouples, what type.
  • Up/Down KIPs for radiometers: Later.
  • Long term NIR radiometer solution from (Alex has bookmark somewhere): Start researching for 2011 installation.
  • Soil moisture tube issue
    • South instrument is wonky, planning on fixing both w/ tubes.
  • Questions on how we want sonic anemometer data collected (sample rate).
    • U,V,W or Sonic?
    • Vector averaging is different between RMYoungs and Sonic Anemometers.

Sept 2010 Trip:

  • What power do we need for LIDAR
  • Need RJ45 connectors and crimper

Follow up stuff:

  • Kerry to ship NIR domes/sensor.

Goals:

Fiber

  • What up w/ the fiber Dozier?
    • Wouldn't it make sense to grid the fiber

$$Connectors: Kerry/Alex:

  • Standardize/implement.
  • Sus out ones we have and order more if they werk.
  • Alex likes this unit for $900.

$$Muxers: Kerry:

  • Research and order 1/2 solid state muxers.
  • Maybe migrate stuff from MUX1 to other channels instead.

Thermisters

  • Calibrate CUES units
  • Long term plans for Sesame units?

Depth pingers: Kerry/Alex/MTC.

  • Replace and test w/ newly calibrated pingers.
  • Scope out some Campbell (SR50) units and run this winter.
  • Talked at one point about investigating laser based depth sensors, interest considering LiDAR?

Lysimeters: MTC/Alex:

  • Purge big one.
  • Repair others (clear materials at SNARL).

Chimney Drip: MTC/Alex:

  • Thick tubing to drain tube into PVC and out to SW corner.

Tipping buckets: MTC:

  • Test switches and scope drains and plan overhaul (next year).

Anemometers: Kerry/Alex, w/ input from gang:

  • I think we still need a more robust solution than our current sitch. Not sure what.
    • Heated sonic, research and hopefully implement this fall/winter.
  • look at the sonic (RM Young 3D 81000).
  • Formalize routine for raising/lowering wind mast... investigate less manual alternatives?

Loggers

  • UPload progams to wiki, program upload to WIKI and backload as much as possible.
  • Scope programming and clean it up.
  • All the same, and all have 2GB.
    • Calculate time till over-run.
    • Confirm overwrite is turned on.

Camera: MTC

    • Drop mount length down.
    • Program Home etc.

Moisture Probes:

  • Scope Data, Alex feels data is no good. What do we want to do?

Temperature Probes:

  • Scope data and research TLC needs.

$$Power: Kerry/Alex/MTC

  • Need new Marine Deep Cycle solution... or migrate to a 12-15v supply.
  • Test UPS for computer.

Radiometers: Kerry/Alex:

  • Replace downlooking radiometers w/ calibrated units.
  • Longwave programming.
  • New shadow band appears to be performing well.
    • Scope power alternatives for heater power supply.
      • 12V power supply on line power?
    • Retire manual now, leave instrumentation in place as backup w/ radiometer in bunker.
    • Calibration every 2 years, plan for 2011 session. Do we need a second for leapfrogging?
  • NIR radiometers: red domes are close to impossible to obtain, we'll probably squeak by another year or two on what we've got but we need to investigate long term solutions. Alex has done good ground work on this.
    • Alex's notes on net radiometers:
It looks like the integrated net radiometers are starting to get popular.
Campbell just announced the release of a new one which looks like a really
slick design and has better specs than the other set we were looking at:
http://www.campbellsci.com/cnr4

CNR4-L 26003- Kipp & Zonen 4-Component Net Radiation Sensor $6,400.00
26120 26120 Net Radiation Sensor Mounting Kit $145.00
CNF4-L 26008- Kipp & Zonen Ventilation Unit w/Heater $1,600.00

They've also got something for $4350 they're calling the NR01, manufactured
by Hukseflux, which appears to be the same instrument as the Dynamax SN01:
http://www.campbellsci.com/nr01

$$Perimeter Poles: Ned/Alex:

  • Ned to investigate permit/pounder/materials to implement 4"OD, 6' long poles.
  • Scoping plates w/ couplers/poles welded. 2-3' plate, 4-6' poles w/ 3-4" OD.

$$Paint: MTC/Ned/Alex:

  • Scraper
  • Sprayer from mountain?

$$Snow Pillow:

  • nothing happening currently but still on the long-term wish-list. Previous notes reference a "DRUCK 5 PSI"???

$$Precip Guage?

  • Laser based unit?

$$MMSA chairlift wind integration:

  • Chair1 working well, additional updates pending Dallas/Davis/Dozier meeting on Sept 19th.

Graphs: Alex/Ned/MTC:

  • RTMC (comes w/ loggernet) implementation of graphs, similar to Patrol.
